lombricube : Sample of a living soil

Vertdéco wishes to offer the possibility for a child to understand what is a living soil, a soil that reproduces by itself – when we allow it to express itself.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION DESIGNED BY VERTDECO

Lombricube

It is a cube made of paper with a sample of living soil and a few earthworms inside. It is now the responsibility of the child receiving this gift to carefully carry the cube home, to maintain the chain of life by protecting this little cube, by creating a favourable environment for it, by making it grow and by letting it multiply itself. And if your child succeeds, after around six months, you will have your very own vermi-compost!

FEW TRICKS …

… To start the production of your living soil:

  • Place your lombricube in a terrarium or in a plastic box with a lid (box of 500 ml is more than enough to begin with).
  • Slightly wet it or surround it with damp soil so that the paper softens. Either wait for the earthworms to come out of the cube by themselves in a few days or gently release them into the box.
  • You can give them your kitchen green waste to feed upon. To start with, you can use few green salad leaves. At best, at room temperature, the quantity of food an earthworm eats per day is half of its weight. It eats plants already decomposed by soil bacteria.
  • Never let water accumulate in the box ( the danger of drowning the animal): Either drain out the excess water or let cardboard or paper absorb it. Then the earthworms can eat the soaked paper.
  • Earthworms do not eat meat, repelling plants (garlic, citrus peel).
  • If you continue to take care, your green wastes will transform into compost by the earthworms!
